Since 1988 within the framework of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, Greece is responsible for the provision of meteorological information for maritime safety referring to the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea Issuing Service for the GMDSS METAREA III. The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) provides marine bulletins (WARNINGS & FORECASTS) for the Eastern Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. Respectively, the Meteo-France provides the bulletins for the Western Mediterranean Sea. In 2015 the HNMS has been certified according ΕΝ ISO 9001: 2008 for the Quality Management System (QMS) applied for the provision of Marine Meteorological Services, fully aligned to the international regulations impose by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), and the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and International Hydrographic Organization (IHO).
